Celebrating Ten Years of Yoga at SBS

Bridget Ikin, former General Manager of SBS Independent, was the one who got yoga rolling in May 1997. She contacted Eve Grzybowski from Simply Yoga in Crows Nest about teaching a lunchtime class. Part of the legacy that Bridget left when she eventually retired from SBS was a well-established culture of yoga.

Even though the first course was only a six-week trial, yoga became firmly entrenched.

After that first course, the new SBS yoga students were asking for a second lunchtime class, and eventually two more.

People who attended regularly reported the classes helped with stress levels and that they “were nicer to each other” when returning to work after attending a class.

Several of the SBS yoga students over the years went on to train as yoga teachers in their own right.

In November 2004, word came down from management that the conference room, which had housed the classes for so long, was needed exclusively for corporate meetings and trainings. A solution was found. Yoga now shares the space used by the SBS Youth Orchestra. The room was carpeted and painted, and provided with reverse cycle air conditioners.

This big space has plenty of room for storing the yoga equipment and up to 10 to 15 people can participate in a class.

A gorgeous silvery sunset on the Bay, after a very warm autumn afternoon (21 degrees).

From our foreshore walk on Sunday. Don't you just love Sydney's watery ways?

Point-and-shoot, actually zoom, images from our al fresco coffee in Waverton today....(With a little help from photoshop!)

Late autumn, late afternoon...Christmas cactus blooming in May....

I took a photo of our seagulls because, for some reason, they were on the Bay in greater numbers today. But, hey, really, they are rather dull looking creatures comared with our spoonbill who is of graceful stuture, pure white, and does interesting moves (and is fun to play around with in photoshop)....

I'm still working away at my second term painting/pastel. Finally I'm starting to feel affectionate towards it. Last term's painting is unfinished, so I went back to look at it again and discovered that I could make some improvements. Gawd, one has to be patient!

Down on the Neutral Bay foreshore, there are some charming boat sheds. Do these really look like boats live in them rather than people?

Sydney icons that I photographed on our harbour foreshore walk this afternoon: Harbour Bridge, Opera House, and "Pinchgut" Prison....

A white-faced heron and a cormorant came to visit today, braving big winds on the Bay....

Another morning of early morning white out. Apparently transportation services were disrupted, i.e. ferry services stopped, planes diverted and photographic endeavors thwarted :)

I've been anticipating the rain that the weather bureau has been predicting. However, you can see from this shot that it is still Indian-summer balmy weather in Sydney. Please, God, let's have some rain!

I don't know if it's Simon Dean's superior gardening skills or just the season for poinsettas but suddenly they are radiant and profuse in our side courtyard. Enough to stop a jaded photographer in her tracks....

May 9th 2007 would have been Shelley's 60th. So, we friends here got together to remember her amazing presence in our lives....

These guys (well, girl & boy, I guess) are hard to photograph. They don't really sit still for a portrait. Especially when food is in front of them, they get rather excited, beaks like a hoover hoses. I know you've seen them before but they are forever cute....

6:30am this morning, just before our "constitutional". Not feeling particularly bright for some reason, maybe the intensity of Mondays, now that I'm back at art classes. It's all worth it.

Portraits from our Simply Yoga photoshoot and from the dinner party last night....

Our friend Sue Carrol, enjoying the Tambourine Bay Wharf Road amenities....

A slow slide into the Bay seems inevitable the way our boatshed is apparently going downhill here....However, it has been going on for quite some time, and apart from the lawnmower, all inside contents are floatable....

Some photos of our teachers' practice this morning, everyone doing their own thing.....
