Various birds of Mitchells Island....

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

What a difference 4 days and an earth mover make! Farmer Scott's lake and overflow onto our lower wetlands gone.
And a clean, cleared pad for our house. Next the steel framework will arrive and cement laid over the base. Whoo-hoo!

At the first hint of cool weather, harbinger of spring (?), Jordie arrived on our bed to enjoy the warmer clime of top level 1 Wharf Rd. He's no dummy, and he'll be gone for Indian summer....

A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His mouth can hold more than his belly can,
He can hold in his beak,
Enough food for a week.
I'm damned if I know how the hell he can! (Ogden Nash? I don't think so...)

I loved this photo so much that I "stole" it from my friend Maarit's blog. (I hope she is still my friend. She is also the builder of this beautifully serene pond which is located at Coconut Well, Broome, Western Australia. Ta, Maarit....

Water birds, masked lapwings, Daniel calls them Myrna and Loy, which probably dates him as I doubt many under 50 year olds would know the reference.
Wildlife - today's news dominated by the salvation of a koala from the bush fires (now named Sam). If upwards of 180 people have died in the fires, what number of wildlife and domestic animals. I think better fire planning will come out of this disaster, which apparently hasn't been given the all-clear even now....

Afternoon tea, an event that is very foreign to my American breeding, was served in the Wilshire's gardens, replete with cucumber sandwiches and two types of scones.

Eve and Daniel celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary at the Day on the Green Concert featuring Leonard Cohen and as a warm-up act Paul Kelley....Maybe the best concert I've ever seen, due to the extraordinary talent and graciousness of L. Cohen and his wonderful band. It didn't hurt that Daniel arranged for us to be VIP guests with a 3-course dinner included....

286 days until Daniel and I can go to the beach even in the middle of the week as (temporary) retirees! Yippee!
